Understanding the Anatomy of the Shoulder

The shoulder is a complex ball-and-socket joint made up of 3 major bones — the collarbone or Clavicle, the shoulder blade or Scapula and the upper arm bone or Humerus.

Two joints are formed from the junctions of these three bones- the Glenohumeral joint (the main shoulder joint) and the Acromioclavicular (AC) joint.

Each joint surface has cartilage cushions and ligaments to connect the bones, and tendons to attach the muscles to the bones.
